Chaminade University of Honolulu has invited author and commentator Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister as the next presenter in its Mackey Lecture series. She will speak of “Spirituality and Culture,” 4 to 5:30 p.m., April 6, in the Mystical Rose Oratory on the Saint Louis/Chaminade campus. She will also give a “workshop/retreat” the day before, April 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Mystical Rose.
According to a brochure advertising the lecture, Sister’s Joan’s talk will address “the relationship of spirituality and cultural change — the call of Moses, global definitions for the seven deadly sins and a look at American society as we move forward in the 21st century.”
Her retreat will be divided into a morning and an afternoon session. The morning session, “God, Women, and the World: Telling the Story Another Way,” will discuss the “premise that what people do or fail to do about ecology depends on what they think about themselves and their relationship to things around them.”
The afternoon session, “Women, Power, and Peace,” will argue that women, rather than men, in political leadership would improve the chances of achieving global peace.
Sister Joan is a lecturer, the author of more than 35 books and a National Catholic Reporter columnist. She served one term as president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and was prioress of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie for 12 years.
The April 5 workshop costs $15 in advance or $20 at the door. The payment covers refreshments and a box lunch for those who register by March 31. The April 6 lecture is free.
For information, call Marianist Brother Dennis Schmitz at 735-4801 (office) or 232-6691 (cell). A registration form is available online at www.marianisthawaii.org.
