A visiting Jesuit university professor and author will be the July “artist of the month” at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace Gallery, starting July 4, at 5 p.m.
Jesuit Father Jerry Overbeck of Loyola University Chicago will feature two books and 12 articles on liturgy, pastoral psychology and other topics. Having a writer as its featured artist is a departure for the gallery’s usual presentation of visual artists.
The gallery, the former cathedral parish meeting room on the first floor of the chancery, is part of a downtown consortium of 34 venues that display their wares every “first Friday” of the month.
A Jesuit for 44 years and a priest for 34, Father Overbeck has four master’s degrees and a doctorate in liturgical theology and cultural anthropology. His research has taken him to North Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Hawaii.
His writings present his theological insights and educator’s instincts through the lens of practical experience — with humor added.
He has worked for 31 years at Loyola Chicago where he is currently the chaplain of the School of Law and the School of Social Work, teaches an undergraduate course in liturgy and ritual, and lives with 415 first-year students in Regis Hall.
A frequent visitor to the islands and the cathedral parish, he is in Hawaii from June 15 to Aug. 2.
The books Father Overbeck will present at the gallery are “Preparing Your Catholic Wedding” and “Ancient Fonts, Modern Lessons.”
Here is a partial list of his articles which will also be available:
