Learning about Damien

Sacred Hearts Sister Mary Dolorine Pires, center, gave members of the Missionary Basic Christian Community (MBCC) of Hawaii-Renew a presentation on Blessed Damien, May 19, at St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church in Mililani. Sister Mary Dolorine, belongs to the same religious congregation as the soon to be canonized Father Damien of Molokai, provided insight into the priest’s character and spirituality by quoting from his letters. Participants learned that Blessed Damien was a “happy man, a true ‘Hawaiian’ and a holy man.”  Standing next to Sister Mary Dolorine is St. John pastor Father Manuel Hewe.

The face of Mary is shown in a detail, side view of "The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception," a painted and gilded statue attributed to Juan Martinez Montanes. It is among the religious artworks on display until May 31 in "The Sacred Made Real" exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
