On the last Sunday of every month, our parishioners are treated to a brunch after the 10 a.m. Mass. This started a few years ago and is hosted by the various parish ministries and also by individuals and families. It started off as light refreshments and beverages but has since evolved into full meal. Here are examples of some of the dishes served: sandwiches, Portuguese bean soup, Filipino miki soup, meat platters, fruit dishes, Jell-o, as well as desserts, some of ethnic origin. Everyone enjoys the delicious food and looks forward to spending time with fellow parishioners and old friends and making new ones. (Reported by Kalae Martin) … Parishioner Marie Thomas was named a “Shining Star” for the 2010 County of Maui Volunteer Center Recognition Awards Program, April 17, at The Queen Kaahumanu Center. She volunteers at Hale Kau Kau, which led to her nomination. For the past three years Marie has coordinated the annual fundraiser, which this year raised over $100,000 to feed the hungry. It’s an effort that takes months of planning and many hours of work. The awards event was part of National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, and winners and finalists were presented with leis and certificates. Marie’s children and grandchildren were there to see her receive her award and to enjoy her special day with her. Marie started coming to our parish over 13 years ago as a visitor. The church and its people gained a special place in her heart and four years ago she became a Kihei resident and a fulltime parishioner. That has been our good fortune. Marie also sings and solos in the church choir, and with The Maui Chorale Arts. (Reported by Anita Carrington; photo by Leroy Carrington)

About 36 confirmandi went on the spiritual, fun-filled Confirmation Phase II Retreat, “Sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit,” at Camp Kokokahi, April 16-18. What made this year extra special was the participation of seven students from St. Rita Parish in Nanakuli. Of the retreat’s many spiritual themes, the strongest message was to keep their faith and action journeys thriving — life after Confirmation will not be easy but know that God loves us with an unconditional love. James 2:18: “Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.” Thank you, Father Jon Cabico for your talk and for hearing confessions. The retreat was coordinated by the religious education retreat team and Manette Kokubun! (Reported by Rose de Vera-Javier)
