50 years ago – July 1, 1960

Father John B. Read, director-editor of the Hawaii Catholic Herald, left Friday evening on a two months tour of the various Catholic shrines of Europe. Father Read is leading a group of twelve on this tour. Pictured with the priest at Honolulu International Airport are Mrs. Rose Raymond, Miss Louis Holt, Father Read, Mrs. Rose Vierra, Mrs. Eleanor Desha, Mrs. Thomas J. Lincoln, and Mr. Thomas J. Lincoln. Four more will join the group in New York.

25 years ago – June 21, 1985

Our Lady of Sorrows teachers agree to renew contracts

A heated public dispute between the faculty and staff at Our Lady of Sorrows School and the pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish seemed to be cooling off as the six teachers and two staff members who resigned their positions June 13 agreed six days later to continue their employment at the school for the coming academic year.

The school personnel reached their decision after receiving a letter from the pastor, Franciscan Father Salvator Stefula, asking them to reconsider their resignations and sign contracts by June 19. …

This past academic year, responsibility for managing school finances was transferred to a newly created parish finance committee made up of six parish representatives appointed by the pastor.

10 years ago – June 23, 2000

Diocesan Synod 2000

It started with 22,000 responses to a survey handed out in the pews two years ago. It ended on Pentecost Sunday, June 13, at Star of the Sea Church with 12 proposal – 12 visions for the future of the Catholic Church in Hawaii. …

[The top 12 synod proposals as summarized by the Herald’s article]: 1) Youth boards and youth centers; 2) parish youth ministers; 3) Trained and effective catechists; 4) Catholic family life center; 5) Strengthening of religious education; 6)Workshops on liturgy; 7) Quality education and faith formation; 8) Plan development; 9) Increased publicity for family resources; 10) Diocesan vocation forum; 11) Quality of homilies; 12) Increase collaboration.
